Isola d'Ischia

Forio d'Ischia

Around three kilometres from Lacco Ameno, you reach the centre of the municipality of Forio, which stretches over around 1,285 hectares, the largest centre of the island and the second largest in terms of population, with 11,256 people (1991).

The architecture here is clearly Mediterranean, and is adorned with numerous cupolas and towers, situated among the verdant hill of Zaro and Punta Imperatore, and behind the majestic Mount Epomeo, this location is well-loved and visited by artists.

The climatic and thermal station is among the most famous in the world, combining modern hotels and guesthouses, coasts and marvellous beaches, with soft and clean sand, as well as the green vineyards that produce the most delicious DOC wines. The Poseidon Gardens and the "Raggio Verde" are unrivalled. The main agglomerates are: Cesotta, Chiaia, Scentone, Monterone, Spadara, Cuotto, Imperatore, Cimmentorosso and Panza, but the old centre still retains its ancient charm.

The municipality of Forio has the most beaches. In fact there are five of them: Citara beach, Cava, San Francesco, Sorgeto and La Chiaia. Citara is situated in an enchanted bay that is bathed in sunlight throughout the year.

Here you can find the enchanting Poseidon Gardens, famous throughout the world for their natural beauty. In summer, the beach of Citara is one of the most frequented on the island, a destination filled with young people and a place of recreation for all ages.

The sand is rather course, like the beach of Cava dell'Isola which is just a few hundred metres away. The beach of Cava dell'Isola is not very visible from the road but enjoys an enchanting morphological aspect given by the distinctive rocks found here. Cava is a refuge for young people, a unique meeting place on the island where volleyball tournaments and night-time parties are held. If you carry on towards the centre of the town, you will find Chiaia beach. The sandy shore is narrower than the others. The beach is situated directly near the road and is therefore completely visible and accessible. If you continue along, you will reach the beach of St. Francesco, which has an enchanting slope of rock on one side.

Near the beach are some of the most beautiful hotels and restaurants on the island. The beach of Sorgeto, in Panza d'Ischia (a hamlet in the municipality of Forio) has a pebbly shore.

The enchanting bay enjoys a background of crystalline sea that is warmed by the island's natural volcanic resources. There are numerous basins of warm water, built by the tourists themselves with the pebbles found on the beach.
